The Israel-based, UN-recognized ZAKA humanitarian volunteer organization is working round the clock in Haiti. Their mission, to save those who can be saved and honor those who cannot. As people of faith, ZAKA volunteers believe that we are all created in God's image, that the dead deserve the same respect as the living. They go to the ends of the earth – literally – to carry out their sacred work, regardless of race, religion or creed. ZAKA volunteers have years of experience in dealing with terror attacks and mass casualty incidents in Israel and around the world, including the tsunami, hurricane Katrina and Mumbai. Even though Haiti is half way round the world from the Holy Land, the ZAKA International Rescue Unit was the first Israeli delegation on the ground, racing against time to help:
The task is huge. The needs are great. The costs are crippling. But ZAKA's willingness and determination to help the victims are endless. ZAKA volunteers are there now and will stay in Haiti as long as they are needed. To carry out their sacred work and help the people of Haiti, they need:
